I had to do it one day, right? Every month for one whole year now, a local letter lover from RVA has let me pick their brains about their work and creative process. Now it's my turn. From my early days as a budding graphic designer on AIM to my current endeavor of learning calligraphy over 100 days, here is my lettering story.
One thing my college professors constantly harped on was the importance sketching. A project wasn't complete unless we turned in thumbnail sketches for it too. I hated doing them. I naively thought my first idea was always the winner and I wanted to get it started on the computer right away. But over the years, I realized the necessity of those little thumbnails and sketching is now a crucial part of my process.
I didn't always use tracing paper for lettering, but once I discovered it there was no turning back. I honestly have no clue how I was able to work without it before! Over the years, I've discovered a few tricks for using it.
